Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's Hulk (1962) is rage and conscience in one body. Lee acknowledged the debt to the Golem of Jewish legend — the protector made of clay — and to Jekyll and Hyde; Kirby, who grew up poor on the Lower East Side, drew the anger from life.
