The Spirit
First appearance : The Spirit Section (1940)
Will Eisner, eldest son of Jewish immigrants in Brooklyn, created The Spirit in 1940 and turned the comics page into cinema. Decades later, A Contract with God (1978) pioneered the graphic novel — the industry's highest awards, the Eisners, carry his name.
