A German Jew who fled to the Netherlands in 1938, Walter Süskind was made manager of the Hollandsche Schouwburg, the Amsterdam theatre where the city's Jews had to report before deportation. He used the job to falsify the registers: with the nursery director Henriette Henriques Pimentel and the accountant Felix Halverstad, he struck children's names from the German lists — children who did not exist on paper could not be missed — while the nursery opposite passed them through its garden to the teacher training college next door, and the resistance took them from there.
About 600 children were saved this way. Süskind cultivated the SS officer in charge to keep the scheme running; he, his wife and their daughter were deported, and he died in the winter of 1945.
