Marianne Cohn is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Resistance courier who led Jewish children across the Swiss border and, arrested with a convoy, refused rescue rather than abandon them.
Born to a family of German Jewish intellectuals who fled to France, Marianne Cohn worked for the Mouvement de la Jeunesse Sioniste, escorting groups of Jewish children on foot to the Swiss border. Arrested in May 1944 with a convoy of twenty-eight children, she was offered an escape by the Resistance and refused it, fearing reprisals against the children if she vanished. She was tortured and murdered by the Gestapo on 8 July 1944, at twenty-one. The children survived. In her cell she wrote the poem 'Je trahirai demain' — I will betray tomorrow, not today.
