Gali Baharav-Miara is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Attorney General of Israel since February 2022, the first woman in the post, after some thirty years at the Tel Aviv District Attorney's Office

How & why

Origins and early life

Gali Baharav-Miara was born on 18 September 1959 and grew up in Givatayim, the daughter of the painter Shulamit Baharav and of Emanuel Baharav, who fought with the Palmach in the War of Independence.

Work and career

She served in IDF Military Intelligence from 1978 to 1980 and then studied law at Tel Aviv University, earning a bachelor's degree in 1984 and a master's degree in 1990. She joined the Tel Aviv District Attorney's Office in 1985 and worked there for some thirty years, mostly in civil and administrative law, becoming director of its administrative department in 2002. From 2007 to 2015 she was Tel Aviv District Attorney for Civil Affairs, at the head of the largest civil division in the country, and she then became a consultant to the law firm Tadmor Levy and sat on several public committees.

On 7 February 2022 the government unanimously approved her as Attorney General of Israel, the first woman to hold the post in the history of the state. The cabinet voted in August 2025 to dismiss her, and on 14 December 2025 a seven-justice panel of the High Court of Justice unanimously annulled that decision and stated that she remained Attorney General. The Jerusalem Post placed her with Esther Hayut sixth on its 2023 list of the fifty most influential Jews.

No source states her Jewish identity in so many words, and the biography of an Israeli public servant has little reason to mention it. She is here under the Israeli presumption the site adopted on 7 September 2026 — a Hebrew given name and surname, a life in Israel and a strong attested tie, here her service in IDF Military Intelligence and her office as Attorney General — which is a presumption and not a declaration, and which any contrary source overturns.
