Filip Müller was twenty when he was assigned to the Sonderkommando at Auschwitz — the Jewish prisoners forced to work in the gas chambers and crematoria, and normally killed within months to erase what they had seen. He survived nearly three years and five liquidations of his unit. He testified at the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials, wrote Eyewitness Auschwitz, and gave one of the central testimonies of Claude Lanzmann's Shoah — including the moment he decided to walk into a gas chamber with a transport, and was pushed out by the women inside, who told him he had to live to tell it. He did.
