A Polish-born Jewish nurse in France, Sabine Zlatin and her husband Miron hid Jewish children from the round-ups, and in 1943 opened a home for them at Izieu, in the Ain — a farmhouse where forty-four children lived in something like safety. On 6 April 1944, while she was in Montpellier trying to find them somewhere safer, Klaus Barbie's men raided the house and deported all forty-four children and seven staff; only one adult survived.
Miron was shot in Estonia. Sabine Zlatin spent the next fifty years making sure the names were known, and her testimony helped convict Barbie in 1987. The house at Izieu is now a national memorial.
