Steven Weinberg is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Unified theory of the electromagnetic and weak forces (electroweak unification)

How & why

Raised in a Jewish family in New York, Weinberg formulated in 1967 the electroweak theory, showing that electromagnetism and the weak nuclear force are two aspects of a single unified interaction — a cornerstone of the Standard Model of particle physics. He shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics with Abdus Salam and Sheldon Glashow. A powerful writer and public intellectual, he was also an outspoken supporter of Israel and of science education.
