Polyakov, a Russian-American theoretical physicist of Jewish descent, is one of the architects of modern quantum field theory and string theory. He helped introduce instantons and confinement ideas, formulated the Polyakov action for the string, and pioneered the conformal bootstrap and gauge/gravity duality. He worked at the Landau Institute in Moscow before joining Princeton in 1989.
