Born to a Jewish family in Berlin, Furstenberg escaped Nazi Germany as a child and was raised in the United States before settling in Israel at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He forged deep, unexpected bridges between ergodic theory (the study of dynamical systems) and number theory and combinatorics, notably a dynamical proof of Szemerédi's theorem. He shared the 2020 Abel Prize with Gregory Margulis. He is Jewish.
