Son of the mathematician Joram Lindenstrauss, Elon Lindenstrauss trained at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and applied ergodic theory — the study of long-term behavior of dynamical systems — to deep problems in number theory, including measure rigidity and progress on the Littlewood conjecture. In 2010 he became the first Israeli to receive the Fields Medal. He is an Israeli Jew.
