Duran (the Tashbetz) was a Sephardic rabbi, physician and philosopher who fled anti-Jewish violence in Majorca for Algiers, where he led the community. His work 'Magen Avot' offered a systematic account of Jewish belief alongside discussions of natural science and philosophy, and his legal responsa remained authoritative for centuries. He was a practising Jewish scholar and communal leader.
