David Nieto was the hakham (chief rabbi) of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews' Congregation of London and a trained physician, mathematician and philosopher. He defended traditional Judaism against deism and rationalist scepticism, notably in his work 'Matteh Dan' (Kuzari Sheni), and wrote on the Jewish calendar and natural science. He was a leading Sephardic Jewish scholar of his generation.
