Ernest Nagel was a philosopher of science, a leading figure in American logical empiricism, whose 'The Structure of Science' (1961) became a classic analysis of explanation and scientific method. A longtime professor at Columbia, he shaped modern philosophy of science. Born into a Jewish family in what is now Slovakia, he immigrated to the United States as a child.
