Evelyn Fox Keller was born in Queens to Jewish immigrants from Russia. Trained as a theoretical physicist, she turned to the history and philosophy of science and wrote A Feeling for the Organism, the biography that brought Barbara McClintock's work to general attention, and Reflections on Gender and Science, which opened the question of how the language and assumptions of gender shape what science asks. She was a MacArthur Fellow and professor at MIT.
