Bahya ben Joseph ibn Paquda was a Jewish philosopher and rabbinic judge (dayan) of eleventh-century Zaragoza, author of 'Duties of the Heart' (Hovot HaLevavot, c. 1080), the first systematic Jewish work of ethics and inner spiritual devotion. Writing in Judeo-Arabic and blending Neoplatonism with rational piety, he shaped Jewish moral and devotional thought for centuries; it was later translated into Hebrew by Judah ibn Tibbon.
