Nissim ben Reuben of Gerona, known by the acronym RaN, was a leading Catalan Talmudist, philosopher and physician, and one of the last great authorities of medieval Spanish Jewry. He was a rabbinic Jew whose commentary on Alfasi and whose 'Derashot ha-Ran' (Sermons) explored the relation of reason, natural law and divine revelation, arguing for the necessity of prophetic revelation alongside human reason. His legal rulings remained authoritative in later Jewish law.
