Simcha Rotem is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Fighter in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising who led the surviving fighters out through the sewers under the burning ghetto.
Born Szymon Rathajzer and known by his nom de guerre 'Kazik', Simcha Rotem was nineteen during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. When the ghetto was burning and the fighters were trapped, he went back in through the sewers as a guide and led dozens of survivors out beneath the city — the escape that saved what remained of the ŻOB. He fought in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, and after the war worked with the Bricha, moving survivors toward Palestine. He was the last surviving fighter of the uprising's command when he died in Jerusalem in 2018.
