Haika Grossman is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Leader of the Bialystok ghetto underground and a fighter in its 1943 uprising, later a member of the Israeli Knesset for nearly twenty years.
A leader of the HaShomer HaTzair youth movement in Poland, Haika Grossman returned to Białystok when Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941 and helped organise the ghetto underground. Carrying forged papers as a Polish woman named Halina Woranowicz, she worked as a courier between the ghettos of Białystok, Vilna, Lublin and Warsaw, bought weapons and smuggled them in, and supplied the partisan units forming in the forests.
She fought in the Białystok ghetto uprising of August 1943 and helped build an underground unit that outlived it. She emigrated to Israel in 1948, joined Kibbutz Evron, and sat in the Knesset from 1969 to 1988, where she worked on the status of women, on children at risk, and on the law against beating children.
