Mordechai Anielewicz is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Commander of the Jewish Combat Organisation during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of April-May 1943.
Mordechai Anielewicz was a leader of the Hashomer Hatzair youth movement who became commander of the Jewish Combat Organisation (ZOB) in the Warsaw Ghetto. After the deportation of some 265,000 Jews to Treblinka in summer 1942, he organised an armed underground, and on 19 April 1943 his fighters met the final German liquidation operation with gunfire, holding out for close to four weeks against a far better armed force. On 7-8 May 1943 German troops located the command bunker at 18 Mila Street; Anielewicz died there at the age of 23 or 24 and his body was never recovered. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was the largest single act of Jewish armed resistance during the Holocaust and became a reference point for Jewish self-defence thereafter.
