Born in Poland to Jewish communist activists who emigrated to Paris in 1926, Henri Krasucki joined the FTP-MOI — the immigrant wing of the communist armed resistance — under the alias 'Mésange'. His father was deported from Drancy to Birkenau and gassed on arrival in February 1943; his brother was killed attacking a Wehrmacht unit. Krasucki was arrested by the Gestapo on 23 March 1943, tortured for six months at Fresnes without talking, and deported from Drancy to Jawischowitz and then Buchenwald.
Of the 1,002 Jews on his convoy, including 160 children, 86 came back. He returned on 28 April 1945 — 'just in time to march on the first of May', as he put it — and led the CGT, France's largest trade union, from 1982 to 1992.
