Biography

Marek Edelman is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Co-founder of the Jewish Combat Organisation and last commander of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

How & why

Marek Edelman was a youth leader of the socialist Jewish Bund who co-founded the Jewish Combat Organisation (ZOB) in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942. During the uprising of April-May 1943 he was one of its sub-commanders and took over the remaining command after Mordechai Anielewicz's death on 8 May, leading survivors out through the sewers on 10 May. He fought again in the Polish Warsaw Uprising of 1944, then remained in Poland as a cardiologist and later a supporter of the Solidarity opposition, explaining that someone had to stay with those who had died there. His memoir of the ghetto is one of the few first-hand fighter accounts of the revolt; sources disagree on his year and place of birth, which is noted here rather than resolved.
