Siegfried Adolf Wouthuysen was a Dutch theoretical physicist who, with Leslie Foldy, devised the Foldy–Wouthuysen transformation (1950), a unitary transformation of the Dirac equation that cleanly separates positive- and negative-energy states and remains a standard tool in relativistic quantum mechanics. He is also known for the Wouthuysen–Field effect in astrophysics. A Jewish physicist, he went into hiding in the Netherlands in 1942 to escape Nazi persecution.
