How & why

Pais was a particle physicist who introduced key ideas such as strangeness and associated production in the study of subatomic particles, and later became a celebrated historian of science, author of the definitive Einstein biography 'Subtle Is the Lord'. A Dutch Jew, he survived the Nazi occupation in hiding while many of his relatives were murdered, then built his career in the United States. His scientific identity was inseparable from his Jewish heritage.
