Biography

Leslie Foldy is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist; the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation in relativistic quantum mechanics

How & why

Leslie Lawrance Foldy was an American theoretical physicist whose 1949 work with Siegfried Wouthuysen produced the Foldy–Wouthuysen transformation, a key tool for the non-relativistic limit of the Dirac equation, and who also founded the modern theory of multiple wave scattering. Born Laszlo Földi to a Hungarian family and brought to the United States as an infant, he is listed among Jewish physicists by Jewish biographical compilations, though his own biographies do not elaborate on his religious identity.
