Henry Primakoff was an American theoretical physicist who discovered the Primakoff effect (photoproduction of neutral mesons in a nuclear electromagnetic field) and, with Theodore Holstein, devised the Holstein–Primakoff transformation for spin waves; he also advanced the theory of weak interactions and double beta decay. He was born into an assimilated Jewish merchant family in Odessa that emigrated to the United States in 1922.
