Abram Fyodorovich Ioffe was a Soviet physicist often called the 'father of Soviet physics', who founded the Leningrad Physico-Technical Institute and pioneered research on semiconductors, crystal mechanics and thermoelectric generation. He trained a generation of leading Soviet physicists. He was Jewish.
