How & why
A physicist trained at MIT, Guth proposed in 1980 the theory of cosmic inflation — a fleeting burst of exponential expansion in the very early universe that explains its large-scale uniformity and flatness — now a cornerstone of modern cosmology. Born to a Jewish family, he received many honors including the Kavli Prize and the Breakthrough Prize.
