Sholom Zorin is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Commander of the Zorin unit in Belarus, a Jewish partisan detachment that fought the Germans while sheltering hundreds of ghetto escapees.
A carpenter from Minsk who had volunteered for the Red Army at sixteen, Sholom Zorin was shut into the Minsk ghetto in 1941 and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp, from which he escaped into the forests with a captured Soviet officer. When antisemitism inside their mixed partisan unit turned against the Jews who kept arriving from the ghettos, the commander gave Zorin a separate Jewish detachment. Unit 106 — the Zorin unit — became one of the two great Jewish family camps of Belarus alongside the Bielskis': it fought the Germans and it took in everyone, old people and children included, several hundred of whom came out alive. Zorin lost a leg in the fighting and settled in Israel after the war.
