One of ten children of a Jewish family in Łuków, Eta Wrobel worked as a clerk in an employment agency under the Occupation and used the position to forge papers for Jews; as a cleaner and then a restaurant worker she passed on what she overheard and stole weapons from the coats of German customers, smuggling the guns back to the partisans. Arrested by the Gestapo, she was held and beaten in Lublin for ten months, then escaped into the woods on the way to Majdanek.
There she helped organise an all-Jewish partisan unit of eighty fighters and ended up commanding it, mining roads and ambushing German troops. Shot in the leg on one operation, she cut the bullet out herself with a knife and became the unit's makeshift surgeon. She was the only member of her family to survive.
