Eugenio Calò is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Italian partisan commander awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valour, who insisted on treating captured Germans as prisoners of war after his own family had been murdered at Auschwitz.
Born in Pisa to an old Sephardi family, Eugenio Calò lost his workshop and his home to Italy's racial laws, and then his family: his wife Carolina Lombroso, who gave birth to their fourth son on the train, and their children were killed on arrival at Auschwitz in May 1944. He was by then second in command of the Pio Borri partisan division in the Casentino mountains. Two months later his unit captured some thirty German soldiers, and his comrades wanted them tried and shot; Calò refused, insisted they be treated as prisoners of war, and volunteered to take them across the front line, which he did, delivering them to the Allied headquarters at Cortona.
He was captured, tortured and murdered by the Germans on 14 July 1944, and was posthumously awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valour.
