Yitzhak Wittenberg is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Commander of the United Partisan Organisation in the Vilna ghetto, who gave himself up to the Gestapo to spare the ghetto reprisal.
Yitzhak Wittenberg commanded the United Partisan Organisation (FPO), the armed underground of the Vilna ghetto. In July 1943 the Gestapo demanded he be handed over and threatened to destroy the ghetto if he was not. The fighters were ready to defend him; the ghetto's people were not, and Wittenberg — after a night of argument that split the underground — walked out and surrendered himself. He died in Gestapo custody the next day, reportedly by poison a comrade had passed him. His name became a byword in the ghettos for the impossible arithmetic the resistance lived by.
