Born Selim Sznycer in Poland, Shalom Yoran was seventeen when the Jews of Kurzeniec were murdered in a single day in September 1942 — a thousand and forty people, his parents among them. He and his brother hid in a barn and escaped to the forest. Before they were separated, his mother told him: 'Go fight, try to save yourselves, avenge our death, and tell the world what happened.' He survived the winter of 1942–43 in a dugout in the swamps near Lake Naroch, earned his way into a partisan unit by taking weapons from the enemy, and fought until liberation.
He fulfilled the last part of the instruction fifty years later with his memoir 'The Defiant', and spent the rest of his life telling the story to whoever would listen.
