Biography

Sara Ginaite is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Jewish partisan in the Kaunas ghetto underground and the Lithuanian forests; later a historian of the Holocaust in Lithuania.

How & why

Sara Ginaitė was nineteen when she joined the underground in the Kaunas ghetto, smuggled people out to the forests and fought as a partisan; a photograph of her in uniform, rifle over her shoulder, at the liberation of Vilnius became one of the enduring images of Jewish armed resistance. She lost most of her family in the Ninth Fort massacres. She became an academic in Lithuania, emigrated to Canada in 1983, and taught and wrote for decades on the destruction of Lithuanian Jewry — and on the fact that Jews fought back.
