Biography

Misha Gildenman is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Engineer from Volhynia known as 'Uncle Misha', who led a Jewish partisan company in Ukraine and wrote its history afterwards.

How & why

Moshe Gildenman was a bridge engineer in the Volhynian town of Korets who was shut into its ghetto with his family when the Germans came. After the killings began he escaped to the forest with a handful of others and built a Jewish partisan company — known to everyone as 'Uncle Misha's' — which fought in Ukraine, took in Jews escaping the ghettos and joined the wider Soviet partisan movement. He survived the war, having lost most of his family, and wrote five books recording what the Jewish partisans had done, so that it would not be told as though Jews had not fought. He died in Israel in 1957 and is buried in Nes Ziona.
