Shafi Goldwasser is recognized among Jewish contributors to Technology & Engineering — Cryptography and Complexity Theory

How & why

Born in New York City to Israeli parents and raised in Tel Aviv, Goldwasser earned her PhD at Berkeley and joined MIT and later the Weizmann Institute. With Silvio Micali she introduced probabilistic encryption and, with Micali and Charles Rackoff, zero-knowledge proofs, ideas that became foundations of modern cryptography and secure computation. For this work she shared the 2012 ACM Turing Award; she is of Israeli Jewish background.
