Adam Rayski is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Head of the Jewish section of the immigrant labour organisation MOI in France and a founder of its armed resistance, later the historian of that resistance.
Born Abraham Rajgrodski into a Yiddish-speaking Jewish family in Białystok, he came to France in 1932 and joined the Jewish section of the French Communist Party the next year, writing for the Yiddish daily Naye Prese. Under the Occupation he led the Jewish section of the Main-d'œuvre immigrée and helped build its armed wing, the FTP-MOI, whose fighters — most of them foreign Jews — carried out the boldest attacks in occupied Paris.
He also directed the clandestine Yiddish press that warned Jews of the round-ups. After the war he wrote the history of what he had led, above all 'Le Choix des Juifs sous Vichy', and served on the commission that documented the fate of France's Jews.
