Sally Noach is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Dutch Jewish carpet dealer in Vichy France who talked, bluffed and forged hundreds of people out of internment camps and prisons.
Salomon 'Sally' Noach was the son of a Jewish carpet dealer in Zutphen and a carpet dealer himself, working in northern France when the war caught him. Fluent in French and afraid of nobody, he attached himself to the Dutch consulate in Lyon in Vichy France and used it — with a mix of nerve, bluff, forged papers and cash — to pull Dutch refugees and other prisoners out of the internment camps of Saint-Cyprien, Gurs and Rivesaltes and out of French prisons.
He is credited with several hundred people got free that way, and with organising escape routes onward to Spain and Switzerland. He reached London in 1943 and was decorated by Queen Wilhelmina.
