A physical education teacher and cousin of the mime Marcel Marceau, Georges Loinger organised the crossing of hundreds of Jewish children from occupied France into Switzerland — some 350 by his own network — often by taking them to a football pitch beside the border at Annemasse and having them chase a ball over the line. He escaped a German prison camp to do it. After the war he ran the ships that carried survivors to Palestine, including the Exodus. He died in Paris at 108, and never accepted the word hero: the children, he said, were the brave ones.
