Dovid Knut is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Russian-Jewish poet of the Paris emigration who became one of the founders of the Armee Juive, the Jewish armed resistance in France.
Born Duvid Fiksman, the son of a grocer in Bessarabia, he studied in a cheder, began publishing verse at fourteen, and took the pen name Dovid Knut. In Paris from 1920 he became one of the most distinctive poets of the Russian emigration — Nabokov praised his 'energetic verses' — and increasingly a Jewish activist; he and Ariadna Scriabina, whom he married, visited Palestine in 1937. Under the Occupation the two of them founded the Armée Juive with Abraham Polonski and Lucien Lublin.
Knut escaped to Switzerland; Ariadna was killed in Toulouse. After the war he wrote the first history of the Jewish resistance in France, then settled in Israel, where he died.
