A French electrical engineer born in Brest-Litovsk, Lucien Lublin was a Labour Zionist before the war and became, with Abraham Polonski and the poet Dovid Knut, one of the three leaders of the Armée Juive — the Jewish armed resistance in France. The organisation trained fighters, armed them, ran the escape line over the Pyrenees and fought in the liberation of the south. When the war ended Lublin created the Society for Protecting Jewish Children, which gathered up the Jewish children who had survived in hiding and brought them to the new State of Israel.
