An electrical engineer in Toulouse, Abraham Polonski — 'Pol' in the underground — founded La Main Forte with a handful of others in June 1940, in the weeks after the French surrender. In 1942 he and Labour Zionist activists turned it into the Armée Juive, a Jewish army: a commando force drawn from the Zionist youth movements, sworn in on a Bible and a revolver. It fought in Toulouse, Nice, Lyon and Paris, executed informers who sold Jews to the Gestapo, took part in the liberation of the south-west in 1944, and ran an escape line that carried hundreds of its members over the Pyrenees to Spain and on to Palestine. Polonski later commanded the Haganah in France and North Africa.
