Biography

Robert Schatten is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Operator theory; Schatten norms and tensor products

How & why

Robert Schatten was a mathematician of the Lwów school who made fundamental contributions to functional analysis and operator theory. He introduced the theory of Schatten norms and the tensor products of Banach spaces, in part through collaboration with John von Neumann; the Schatten classes remain central to modern operator theory. Born to a Jewish family in Lwów, he lost his entire family in the Holocaust and emigrated to the United States.
