Edward Szpilrajn-Marczewski

Szpilrajn-Marczewski was a Polish mathematician of the Warsaw and Wrocław schools who worked in measure theory, set theory, topology and dimension theory; he is remembered for the Szpilrajn extension theorem (every partial order extends to a linear order) and for results linking Hausdorff and topological dimension. Born Edward Szpilrajn into a Jewish family, he adopted the name Marczewski while in hiding during the German occupation.
