How & why
Nikolai Rubinstein was a Russian pianist, conductor and educator who founded the Moscow Conservatory in 1866, a cornerstone of Russian musical training, and was a close champion of Tchaikovsky's music. Born into a Jewish family that converted to Christianity, he was of Jewish origin, as was his elder brother Anton Rubinstein.
