Lukas Foss was a German-born American composer, conductor and pianist whose wide-ranging output moved from neoclassicism to improvisation and the avant-garde, and who led orchestras including the Buffalo Philharmonic and Milwaukee Symphony. A child prodigy, he emigrated as his family fled Nazi Germany. He was Jewish, born in Berlin.
