How & why
Issay Dobroven was a Russian-born conductor, pianist and composer who led major opera houses and orchestras across Europe, including at La Scala and in Scandinavia. A pupil renowned for his Mussorgsky and Russian repertoire, he built an international career after leaving the Soviet Union. He was born into a Jewish family and originally named Itzhok Barabeichik.
