André Previn was a German-born American conductor, composer and pianist of extraordinary range, moving between Hollywood film scoring (four Academy Awards), jazz, and the concert hall as music director of the London Symphony, Pittsburgh and other major orchestras. His family, being Jewish, fled Nazi Germany when he was a child, emigrating to the United States. He was a Jew.
