Mordechai Tenenbaum is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Commander of the Bialystok ghetto uprising of August 1943 and one of the founders of the Jewish Combat Organisation.
One of seven children of an Orthodox Jewish family in Warsaw, Mordechai Tenenbaum studied Turkish and Semitic languages and joined the Zionist youth movement at nineteen. In Vilna he forged papers by the hundred — he himself carried an identity card as a Tatar named Tamaroff — and used them to move people out of reach of the SS. In Warsaw in 1942 he was among the founders of the Jewish Combat Organisation and among the planners of the ghetto uprising.
Sent to Białystok that November, he built and led the underground there and commanded its uprising in August 1943, when the Germans came to liquidate the ghetto. He also buried the ghetto's archive so that the record would survive; it did. He did not.
