Hirsh Glik was a young Yiddish poet in the Vilna ghetto and a member of its armed underground. On hearing of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943 he wrote 'Zog Nit Keyn Mol' — 'Never say you are walking the final road' — set to a Soviet melody. It spread through the ghettos and the partisan units within months and became the anthem of Jewish resistance; it is still sung at Holocaust commemorations everywhere. Glick was deported to a camp in Estonia, escaped in 1944 and was killed. He was twenty-two. The song outlived every camp that held him.
